One of the central purposes of Black, Copper, &,Bright: The District of Columbia’s Black Civil War Regiment is to tell more than just your traditional Civil War story. This documentary is not just about battlefields, bullets, and banners; it is a saga of men and their families struggling for freedom, justice and dignity. That act links them with the ongoing battle of African Americans to secure economic freedom, racial justice, and human dignity now.

Deep Roots, Strong Branches

Deep Roots, Strong Branches, mirrors the progress of black America itself by following the family of Sergeant Charles Henry Brown, pictured in his service uniform in the home of his great granddaughter Ms. Ruby Thomas. Such was his desire for liberty that he escaped from slavery to join the regiment. That act of courage and defiance made him the motive force in attaining his own freedom. Deep Roots, Strong Branches,” records his travails in combat, his efforts to carve out a life for himself and his family during Reconstruction, and the challenges and successes facing his descendants in Maryland today.
